Latsis Public Benefit Foundation,<\/em> and <em data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"599\">APIVITA<\/em> and is carried out under the auspices of the <em data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"672\">Region of Central Greece.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"1018\">Queen rearing refers to the process of producing queen bees. Through large-scale queen rearing with genetic selection criteria, which will take place in <em data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"838\">Phase B<\/em> of the program by queen breeders trained during <em data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"897\">Phase A,<\/em> the program contributes to addressing the decline in bee populations and improving the genetic traits of bee colonies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1845\">The program is implemented in collaboration with the <em data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1108\">Agricultural University of Athens<\/em> and is being carried out for the third consecutive year, having started in <em data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1202\">Thessaly in 2022<\/em> and expanding to <em data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1248\">Euboea the following year.<\/em> Within this framework, it has already received significant distinctions in Greece, such as the <em data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1377\">Bravo Sustainability Award 2022<\/em> in the <em data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1426\">&#8220;Ecosystem and Biodiversity Protection&#8221;<\/em> category and the <em data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1470\">GOLD Environmental Award<\/em> in the <em data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1505\">&#8220;Sustainable Agriculture&#8221;<\/em> category. Additionally, queen breeders trained in the program played a crucial role in the initiative <em data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1723\">&#8220;Restarting Beekeeping in Thessaly: Queen Rearing \u2013 Restoration and Conservation of Indigenous Genetic Material,&#8221;<\/em> which supported beekeepers affected by <em data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1777\">Storm Daniel<\/em> by providing <em data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1811\">27,000 royal cells<\/em> from selected genetic material.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1847\" data-end=\"1874\"><strong data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1872\">Program Structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"2017\">The program <em data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"1991\">&#8220;Queen Rearing in Central Greece: Utilization, Conservation, and Improvement of Bee Genetic Material&#8221;<\/em> consists of two phases:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2847\">\n<li data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2421\">\n<p data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2421\"><strong data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2090\">Selection and specialized training of up to 20 young individuals<\/strong> with knowledge and experience in beekeeping practices. They will receive training in <em data-start=\"2176\" data-end=\"2216\">queen rearing, royal jelly production,<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2254\">advanced beekeeping techniques.<\/em> After completing the required training, <em data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2327\">8 of the most capable trainees<\/em> with the willingness and ability to support the next stage of the program will be selected.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2423\" data-end=\"2847\">\n<p data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2847\"><strong data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2469\">Deployment of the 8 trained specialists<\/strong> across the Region of Central Greece (approximately 2 per Regional Unit \u2013 Boeotia, Evrytania, Phthiotis, and Phocis). Their role will involve coordinating beekeepers in the area who wish to participate in the program and organizing demonstrations and the practical implementation of queen cell grafting for the production of high-quality queens from selected genetic material.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"2872\"><strong data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"2870\">Program Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2892\"><strong data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2890\">Phase A<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"3233\">The primary goal is to train a group of young beekeepers in queen rearing, equipping them with the skills to perform and demonstrate queen cell grafting to any beekeeper in the region who wishes to benefit. This initiative creates new income opportunities for young beekeepers and enhances their professional sustainability in the sector.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3253\"><strong data-start=\"3240\" data-end=\"3251\">Phase B<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3605\">The second phase involves a significant number of queen cell grafting procedures carried out by a team of specialized beekeepers who will demonstrate the process, explain it in detail, and address any questions from participating beekeepers. The objective is to familiarize a large number of beekeepers with high-quality queen production techniques.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3607\" data-end=\"4117\">The <strong data-start=\"3611\" data-end=\"3629\">long-term goal<\/strong> of the program is the <strong data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3707\">large-scale production of selected genetic material<\/strong> across the Regional Units of <em data-start=\"3737\" data-end=\"3781\">Boeotia, Evrytania, Phthiotis, and Phocis,<\/em> ultimately aiming to <strong data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"3872\">increase honey production and develop more resilient bee colonies<\/strong> by optimizing the indigenous genetic material.
