{"id":14036,"date":"2026-03-30T16:57:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T13:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newagri.org\/?p=14036"},"modified":"2026-05-25T16:52:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T13:52:26","slug":"queen-rearing-in-central-greece-utilization-conservation-and-improvement-of-bee-genetic-material-phase-b-queen-rearing-in-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newagri.org\/en\/lines-of-action\/queen-rearing-in-central-greece-utilization-conservation-and-improvement-of-bee-genetic-material-phase-b-queen-rearing-in-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen Rearing in Thessaly: Distribution of Queen Cells to Support Local Beekeeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"88\" data-end=\"442\">The program \u201cQueen Rearing in Thessaly: Distribution of Queen Cells to Support Local Beekeeping\u201d is implemented in the Regional Units of Larissa, Karditsa, Magnesia and Trikala.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"88\" data-end=\"442\"><strong data-start=\"75\" data-end=\"86\">Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"604\">Following the extensive damage caused by the storm \u201cDaniel\u201d in 2023, which led to the loss of more than 40% of bee colonies, beekeeping in Thessaly, a region with a decisive contribution to national production, remains at a critical stage and requires targeted and consistent support.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"875\">Following two successful initiatives implemented in the region (\u201cRestarting Beekeeping in Thessaly\u201d 2022\u20132023 and \u201cQueen Rearing: Utilization, conservation and improvement of bee genetic material\u201d 2023\u20132024), the need to continue supporting affected beekeepers emerged.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"1090\">The program \u201cQueen Rearing in Thessaly: Distribution of Queen Cells to Support Local Beekeeping\u201d aims to address this need by offering 10,000 queen cells free of charge to 150 beneficiary beekeepers in the region.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1534\">The program is designed and implemented by the organization <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">\u039d\u03ad\u03b1 \u0393\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b3\u03af\u03b1 \u039d\u03ad\u03b1 \u0393\u03b5\u03bd\u03b9\u03ac<\/span><\/span>, in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens and under the scientific guidance of the Laboratory of Sericulture and Apiculture, supervised by Assistant Professor Georgios Gkoras. It is co-funded by the Region of Thessaly, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and APIVITA within the framework of the Billion Bees Program.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"2666\">Purpose of the Program<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1761\">The purpose of the program is to support up to 150 beekeepers affected by the storm Daniel, through the provision of 10,000 queen cells derived from endemic genetic material of the region.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1966\">The production of queen cells is carried out by 8 specialized queen breeders, who utilize either their own selected genetic material or the genetic material of the beekeepers themselves, where available.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"2015\">Through the program, the following are pursued:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2017\" data-end=\"2177\">\n<li data-section-id=\"4jdht4\" data-start=\"2017\" data-end=\"2057\">restoration of bee colony production<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"18rkr9x\" data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2095\">production of high-quality queens<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"q36a6d\" data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2144\">strengthening of the sector\u2019s sustainability<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"qgex8m\" data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2177\">support of the local economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2365\">At the same time, the program contributes to the large-scale production of queen cells from selected endemic genetic material, with the participation of experienced local queen breeders.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2586\">The queen breeders have already been trained through previous initiatives and have demonstrated significant production activity, with more than 800 graftings (2022\u20132023) and the production of 27,000 queen cells in 2024.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2588\" data-end=\"2648\">The initiative has received important distinctions, such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2808\">\n<li data-section-id=\"apq4kt\" data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2741\">Bravo Sustainability Award 2022 (Category: \u201cProtection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity\u201d)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"xzlf8n\" data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2808\">GOLD Environmental Award (Category: \u201cSustainable Agriculture\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"3013\">In the long term, the objective is to strengthen beekeeping in Thessaly, increase production and develop more resilient bee colonies, while contributing to biodiversity and local agricultural production.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"2666\">Target Group<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3070\">The program is addressed to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3228\">\n<li data-section-id=\"179iogq\" data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3168\">primarily beekeepers in Thessaly affected by the storm, following evaluation of applications<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"zbc2h9\"
