{"id":14534,"date":"2026-06-10T15:14:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T12:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newagri.org\/?p=14534"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:29:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T13:29:23","slug":"water-and-agrifood-from-waste-to-sustainable-management-a-critical-discussion-at-green-attica-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newagri.org\/en\/news\/water-and-agrifood-from-waste-to-sustainable-management-a-critical-discussion-at-green-attica-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Water and Agrifood: From Waste to Sustainable Management \u2013 A Critical Discussion at Green Attica Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 data-section-id=\"xxp7ff\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"102\">Water and Agrifood: From Waste to Sustainable Management \u2013 A Critical Discussion at Green Attica Day<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"104\" data-end=\"368\">The organization <strong data-start=\"121\" data-end=\"155\">New Agriculture New Generation<\/strong> participated in the Green Attica Day festival by organizing a discussion on one of the most pressing challenges for the environment and a sustainable future: the management of water resources in agrifood systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"494\">The event was organized by the <strong data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"421\">Region of Attica<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"452\">Hellenic Red Cross<\/strong> at Pedion tou Areos Park on June 6, 2026.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1cl9lgf\" data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"517\">Panel Participants<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"543\">The discussion featured:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"914\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1oa1i9m\" data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"769\"><strong data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"566\">Nikolaos Derkas<\/strong>, President of the Water Management Organization of Thessaly (ODYTH) and Professor at the Department of Natural Resources Management and Agricultural Engineering of the Agricultural University of Athens.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"11ycf0n\" data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"831\"><strong data-start=\"772\" data-end=\"791\">Effie Lazaridou<\/strong>, CEO of New Agriculture New Generation.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6w4e79\" data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"914\"><strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"857\">Dimitris Kourousias<\/strong>, producer of organic legumes and vegetables from Feneos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"1015\">The discussion was moderated by <strong data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"971\">Tania Georgiopoulou<\/strong>, journalist at the newspaper <em data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1014\">Kathimerini<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"17ahfd4\" data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1084\">Addressing the Challenge of Water Management in Agrifood Systems<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1410\">The discussion highlighted the urgent need for initiatives that improve water management in agrifood systems. Agriculture remains the largest water consumer in Greece, accounting for approximately <strong data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1331\">80% of the country&#8217;s total water consumption<\/strong>, while climate change makes water conservation efforts increasingly necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1536\">Participants emphasized that meaningful action must come both from institutional stakeholders and from producers themselves.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1538\" data-end=\"1565\">As Ms. Georgiopoulou noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1966\">\n<p data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1966\">\u201cThe winter of 2025\u20132026 was one of the rainiest in recent decades according to Meteo. For Athens in particular, it was the third rainiest winter of the last 150 years, based on historical data analysis. At the same time, data available on May 17 showed that Eastern Crete remained under significant drought conditions. Unfortunately, there are no easy solutions to the problem of water scarcity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1c5q2zo\" data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"2039\">The Current Situation in Greece and the Role of Precision Irrigation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2213\">During the main discussion, Mr. Derkas provided an overview of the current state of Greek agriculture, noting that irrigation still relies heavily on groundwater resources.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2397\">He also pointed out that, despite improvements observed in certain regions, major interventions aimed at improving water-use efficiency have yet to be implemented on a broader scale.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2651\">Referring specifically to Thessaly, he described the current situation as, in many cases, \u201cunregulated,\u201d leading to substantial water losses. He stressed the need for accurate monitoring and measurement of water consumption across the Thessalian plain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2653\" data-end=\"2862\">He further noted that <strong data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2862\">if precision irrigation practices were systematically applied in Greece and tailored to the actual needs of crops, up to 40% of the water currently used in agriculture could be saved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"3012\">Finally, he highlighted the role of <strong data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"2909\">ODYTH<\/strong>, describing it as a pioneering initiative that consolidates water resource management across Thessaly.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"10h6qr6\" data-start=\"3014\" data-end=\"3043\">The Producer\u2019s Perspective<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3045\" data-end=\"3198\">Mr. Kourousias shared his experience as a producer, emphasizing that the effects of climate change are already evident in everyday agricultural practice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3438\">He stressed that water conservation is no longer optional for farmers and that efficient irrigation contributes not only to lower resource use and production costs, but also to the production of higher-quality and more flavorful products.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3608\">At the same time, he underlined the need for both incentives and awareness-raising initiatives to encourage producers to invest in more sustainable water-use practices.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"o4p18o\" data-start=\"3610\" data-end=\"3652\">Education, Awareness and Good Practices<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3887\">Drawing on the organization\u2019s experience working with thousands of producers across Greece, Ms. Lazaridou highlighted the ongoing need for education around climate change, resource conservation and sustainable agricultural practices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3903\">As she stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3905\" data-end=\"4474\">\n<p data-start=\"3907\" data-end=\"4474\">\u201cWe need both to inspire and to inform. We must showcase positive examples by encouraging producers who have already invested in sustainable practices to share the practical benefits of more efficient water use, both for their farms and for local ecosystems. Awareness campaigns are essential so that rural communities can better understand the challenges ahead, as well as the modern practices and tools available to them.
